Understanding Domain Names and DNS servers
Every computer with access to the
internet has an Internet Protocol address or IP address. This consists
of a number separated by three decimal points. (192.168.0.9) This number
identifies your machine from all others on a network or the entire
internet. Because words are more recognizable and easy to remember, a
Domain Naming system was designed. This domain naming system, or DNS is
how you get from typing microsoft.com to an actual server hosting that
particular website.
A DNS server tells a machine requesting
access to a domain, what IP address that domain resides at.
